Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.
Street
Before becoming Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard, Dryades Street was a commercial corridor where Black people made up nearly 90% of the customers but were denied employment at many businesses.
During the 1960s, civil rights leader Oretha Castle Haley helped challenge these inequalities through organized boycotts, contributing to a movement that extended far beyond New Orleans.
In this STAR HEARTS episode, her grandson Blair Dottin-Haley revisits her influence on the civil rights movement, the history behind the street bearing her name, and the legacy she left behind.
